Soil Building Workshop Engaged All

Over thirty people stopped by the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden this morning, to learn about soil from local horticulturist and arborist Michael Inaba. soil-buiding1.jpgTo begin, Mike demonstrated a couple of simple methods that are used to determine the type of soil that exists in a specific location.soil-building2.jpgAfter a discussion of soil texture and structure, Mike showed the group samples of organic material containing microorganisms that were hard at work.soil-building3.jpgFull of fungi, bacteria and other decomposerssoil-building4.jpgthe material illustrated how organic material improves the texture of soil.soil-building-5.jpgParticipants went home able to determine if they have loam, which is composed of equal parts of clay, sand and silt. Final Hands-on Pruning Workshop!

There will be one more pruning workshop with horticulturist and landscape designer John Lamar on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 10:00 AM. This last in a series of three Naturalistic Pruning Workshops will focus on a demonstration of pruning out in the garden with a substantial hands-on portion. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or highly experienced gardeners. Everyone is welcome and the workshop is free. Please bring gloves and sharp, sterile shears if you have them. The workshop will take place in the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden, 401 South Ventura Street, behind City Hall.
