Many Hands
Volunteers put away their trowels and picked up some construction tools today in the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden. Many hands made light work, as volunteers worked together to build a tiered raised bed that demonstrates adaptive gardening. One section of the bed is 24 inches tall, the perfect height for gardening from a seated position. Here's what we did: First, an area was leveled and the soil that was removed was saved on burlap sheets to add to the new bed.
Next, holes were drilled in the wood and the sides were screwed together.
The bed was carefully assembled
and 1/4 inch hardware cloth was stretched over the bottom to keep out those pesky gophers.
The wire was cut to fit around the posts that anchor the bed in the ground.
Then the wire was stapled to the wood.
Finally, the new bed was installed
and filled with soil, aged manure and compost. Photos by Les Dublin.
