Autumn Color, California Style
Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia) berries at different stages of maturity create splashes of bright seasonal color in the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden.
When the golden berries ripen to red, they provide a tasty treat for the birds.
This native shrub most likely owes its common names, California Holly and Christmas Berry, to its red berries and finely toothed leaves.
