Coffeeberry
Coffeeberry (Rhamnus cailfornica) is a drought tolerant native shrub that grows six to eight feet in height.
Coffeeberry is attractive and has large berries that provide food for wildlife. The leaves of the coffeeberry (above) are very different from the glossy leaves of the Catalina cherry (below).

You wrote that at the rose workshop cranesbill was mentioned as a companion plant. Which cranesbill would that be? Sunset Gardening lists two/three different species.
