Michael Inaba Workshop
Twenty-four people came to the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden this morning, to learn about oaks from horticulturist Michael Inaba. The setting was particularly appropriate, as participants sat in the dappled shade where the branches of a valley oak and a coast live oak, the two main subjects of today's discussion, intersected.
Inaba, a local arborist, explained the do's and don'ts of gardening around oaks, and dispelled some myths about oak care along the way.
A resident squirrel, who looked on, seemed to think that the workshop was a hit.

Find out about water-saving native plants that can be used for landscaping beneath oaks, too. The workshop will take place Saturday, September 20, 2008, at 10:00am-11:30am, in the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden, 401 South Ventura Street, behind Ojai City Hall.
Coffeeberry is attractive and has large berries that provide food for wildlife. The leaves of the coffeeberry (above) are very different from the glossy leaves of the Catalina cherry (below).
Mature Catalina cherry trees also can grow up to 45 feet tall! Thanks to Mike for pointing out the mistake (now fixed) in the Catalina Cherry post. Photos by Les Dublin.
