Actinemys Marmorata Pallida

Mother Turtle came into our garden today ... straight into her Strawberry patch actually! [she, Kame-sama, hiding under the Arugula ...]

have a look at these websites for our 'Sespe Green Turtle', officially a subspecies of 'Southern Pacific Pond Turtle', formerly the 'Western Pond Turtle', though her actual home is streams and wetlands (which largely don't exist any more.)

in particular, download (4th link) the adobe acrobat slideshow of the baby sespe green turtles! this is exactly how our turtles here look, totally dark grimy dull green -- but what a personality they have -- takes months for them to get to know you and accept your presence in their pond or garden!

Hazy Moon

Early this morning, the Hunter's Moon, aglow in a smoky haze, was seen from the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden. A praying mantis, a formidable hunter, lies in wait in the butterfly garden's buddleia. Barely discernible amidst the leaves, the mantis catches his prey. Photos by Les Dublin.

Virtual Tour

An interactive virtual tour of the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden is now available at the City of Ojai website. Now you can explore the garden in the comfort of your own home! Many plants in the garden are labeled and linked to close up images that are available at the click of a mouse. It's the perfect activity for gardeners on a rainy day, but why wait? The easiest way to find the tour is to click on the name of the garden at the top of the Demo Garden page (found at the right under destinations, if you are not already there). This will take you to the official City of Ojai Demo Garden page. Scroll down, download the directions and then click on the tour. Please be patient while it downloads and take your time while you are navigating, or you will miss the best parts!

Tree Trimming

The two eucalyptus trees in the parking lot of the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden were thinned Friday. This is one of the few jobs that volunteers don't handle! A crew of professionals worked all day to prune the large trees and turn the cut branches into mulch. Later, this mulch will be spread along the garden's paths. Photos by Les Dublin.

Going Native

Volunteers renovated a bed last Saturday in the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden. Logs cut from last winter's fallen eucalyptus branches were used to make an interesting border. The bed will eventually demonstrate drought-tolerant native plants suitable for planting near oaks. Photo by Les Dublin.

Joie de vivre

The Nordhoff High School French Club, Joie de vivre, volunteered in the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden this afternoon. Students worked hard spreading mulch in the parking lot and a garden path. Merci!
