Heap Heap Hooray!

Volunteers built a three-heap compost system in the City of Ojai Community Demonstration Garden today. Each heap will be ready to use at a different time, and together the heaps will demonstrate compost at different stages. Open-air compost heaps are practical for large properties, and the piles are easy to turn. To help retain moisture, the heaps are covered with tarps. Photos by Donna Dublin.

Appreciate your dedication and hard work.

Hope you don't lose your trees. The practice of permaculture does recognize their importance even in a garden setting.

Oaks especially, I think, are vulnerable to having their roots moist in summer. California Oak Foundation http://www.californiaoaks.org/
is informative on this area of concern.

Hope soon to see the designated compost demonstration area upgraded and cleaned-up by the City.
They're in good financial shape again.

Plastic tarps?

How about canvas drop cloths instead?

Plastic ones break down into plastic fibers and into the environment rather quickly in Ojai's heat.

There might still be a painter's canvas dropcloth in the demo garden shed.

heaps of fun! ... hard to think of a nicer way to spend the day!

for our new garden we brought in another truckload of much-aged horse manure compost last week ... turning our sandy mineral soil into rich living loam!

We would never do anything to hurt our trees. The heaps are under a pepper tree, not an oak.
