July's Butterflies

These butterflies didn't seem to mind the heat in Ojai this month. They were all spotted in the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden, enjoying the many flowers that don't mind the heat, either. The butterflies, from top to bottom, are; Gulf Fritillary, Western Tiger Swallowtail, Buckeye and Monarch. Photos by Les Dublin.
These large, orange dragonflies can often be seen in the Demo Garden, especially around the two ponds. They look like they can eat a lot of flying insects! Photo by Les Dublin.
We are so fortunate to have a place right in downtown Ojai that provides a habitat for wildlife. This Cooper's Hawk is rearing its young in the Demo Garden. While not endangered, Cooper's Hawks are a Species of Special Concern in California, because of a marked decrease in nesting pairs. Loss of habitat is one reason for the decline of these raptors. This male California Dog-face Butterfly was recently spotted in the Ojai Community Demonstration Garden. A variety of plants in the garden helps attract many different kinds of butterflies. Photo by Les Dublin
