Welcome Weeds

Weeds love the rain, so at this time of year the volunteers in the demo garden are busy trying to keep things under control. But as we do, we should keep in mind that weeds play an important role in the garden. They can help loosen heavy soil, and provide a home for many beneficial insects, like ladybugs and lacewings. Flowering weeds can also help attract bees to the garden. Photo by Les Dublin

What a great photo. Donna, do you pull the weeds, or do you turn them under into the soil?

Great question, Tyler! We use different techniques in different areas of the garden. Sometimes we turn them under into the soil, especially if they haven't yet gone to seed. Other times we hoe or pull them by hand and compost them. Either way, the final result is the same— they help improve the soil!

What a rich and colorful photo. Hopefully we'll be able to see the garden in person on our next trip to the west coast

Great photo. Do bees appreciate the beauty of oxalis ?
Generally I can't bring myself to pull up this "weed". Glad to know I'm sharing mine with the bees!
