New Worm Bin

A young volunteer adds shredded cardboard to prepare the bin for its new residents. The plywood bin was built by volunteers.
After their new home is ready, the red worms are added to the top of the moistened bedding. They waste no time burrowing in and getting to work. Photos by Les Dublin

Very cute photo - startin' 'em young! Do you mail order the worms, or do you take them from other existing worm bins? Red earthworms? Other species?

We had to buy them this time, but if all goes well, we'll have enough for more worm boxes some day!

How do you extract the worms when it's time to start a new batch?
I've found that when it's harvest time, coffee grounds with filters added on top will attract masses of worms under each filter. Just scoop them up and save/transfer to new batch.
Much less labor intensive and more thorough then the usual methods one reads about.

That's a great suggestion - I think I'll build a worm box when we get a little sun.
